This iron dome at the center was the only metal part of the object; the linden or fir boards disappeared into the soil within a few decades. So graves are found where a rusted iron disc lies alone, surrounded by nothing — and it is from this single remnant that we deduce a shield was once there. A detail the boss reveals and that is often forgotten: the hand did not pass through arm straps, as in the Middle Ages. It gripped a simple bar inside the hollow of the boss, with the whole hand.

To go further, our feature on the Viking shield details its construction and its use in combat, and our weapons section completes the kit.

In the same section

Medieval Dragon Shield: Blue and Black Coat of Arms, 49 cm

Medieval Shield with Skull and Crossed Axes: 48 cm

Round Knotwork Shield: Metal Boss, 44 cm

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0974/0569/8430/files/bouclier-rond-bandes-dorees-noir-44cm-ambiance.jpg?v=1787741096
