In the Völsunga Saga, Odin drives a blade into the trunk of the Barnstokkr tree; only Sigmund manages to pull it out, until the day Odin himself shatters it with a strike of his spear. The pieces are kept, passed on to his son Sigurd, and the blacksmith Regin melts them down into a new sword, Gram, with which Sigurd slays the dragon Fáfnir. Narsil broken beneath Elendil, kept in fragments by his heirs, then reforged into Andúril for Aragorn: it is the same mechanism, transposed. Tolkien knew this text intimately — he taught Old Norse at Oxford, had founded an Icelandic sagas reading circle, and wrote his own verse version of the story of Sigurd. Archaeology adds the concrete half: in the Danish deposits of Illerup Ådal and Nydam, hundreds of weapons were twisted, bent, or broken before being cast into the water. Swords were truly broken in the North — to "kill" them along with their wielder, and so that no living person could take them back.

To go further, our guide to the Futhark alphabet covers each sign one by one, and our dossier on the Viking sword explains how these blades were forged.

In the same spirit

Viking Shield & Axes Keychain

Viking Runic Medallion & Paracord Keychain

Viking Tiwaz Rune Bead: The God Who Gave His Hand

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0974/0569/8430/files/breloque-epee-brisee-narsil-argente-ambiance.jpg?v=1787665094
