It was obtained from woad, cultivated and fermented, or from indigo brought from afar at great cost—making it a status color. Indeed, Icelandic sagas give it a very specific meaning: when a character appears wearing a blue cloak, it is a signal. They have come to kill someone. This motif recurs so often, notably in Njal's Saga, that medieval readers would have recognized it immediately, much like we recognize the music that signals a murder today.

📖 To go further: discover our article on Valhalla.

♦ Complete Your Viking Collection

Other pieces for your feast table:

Copper Double Dragon Chalice

Dragon Stem Chalice

Winged Dragon & Amber Gem Chalice
