The Gokstad ship features a row of supports along its gunwales where thirty-two shields were attached, painted alternately yellow and black. Archaeologists believe this was a parade arrangement, mounted when approaching a port or for a funeral ceremony: at sea, the shields would have obstructed the oars and caught sea spray. The image of a shield-laden longship speeding over waves is therefore accurate in its detail, but inaccurate in its context.

📖 To learn more: Discover our guide to the longship.

♦ Complete Your Viking Collection

Discover other items you might like:

Embroidered Algiz Rune Viking Cap

White Embroidered Vegvísir Viking Cap

Faded Valhalla Viking Cap

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0974/0569/8430/files/casquette-viking-drakkar-vikings-france-ambiance.jpg?v=1787425863
