Their ships were built clinker-style, with planks overlapping and joined by thousands of iron nails hammered over a square backing plate, the rove. The Gokstad ship has about a thousand of them. It is this flexible, rather than rigid, assembly that allowed the hull to flex in the swell instead of breaking—and thus to cross the North Atlantic.

📖 To learn more: discover our article on Viking funeral rites.

♦ Complete Your Viking Collection

Other pieces for your feast table:

Skull & Crossbones Tankard

Realistic Skull Mug 500 ml

Skull & Brambles Chalice
