The only near-complete helmet of the period, recovered from a grave at Gjermundbu in Norway and dated to the 10th century, is a rounded iron cap with a face guard, with neither horns nor wings. Horns and wings were born in the 19th century, on an opera stage: costume designer Carl Emil Doepler put them on the heroes of Wagner's Ring of the Nibelung at Bayreuth in 1876. Odin, on the other hand, really is one-eyed in the myths: he gave an eye to the giant Mímir to drink from the well of wisdom.

To explore further, our article on Odin tells of that sacrifice, and our article on Viking armour shows the real Gjermundbu helmet.

In the same section

Viking Thor's Hammer Bottle Opener - Mjolnir Keychain

Viking Shield & Axes Keychain

Viking Runic Medallion & Paracord Keychain

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0974/0569/8430/files/cloche-gardienne-moto-viking-odin-mjolnir-ambiance.jpg?v=1791634028
