This was acceptable in the \u003cstrong\u003ephalanx\u003c\/strong\u003e, where every hoplite advanced shoulder to shoulder, protected on their left by their neighbor's shield. The helmet only makes sense in this formation. Outside of it, it blinds the wearer.
