Eight centuries separate this drawing from the Viking Age. The name means \"the one that shows the way\" (\u003cem\u003evegur\u003c\/em\u003e, the way; \u003cem\u003evísir\u003c\/em\u003e, the guide), and the manuscript never mentions navigation: it promises that \u003cem\u003ethe one who wears this sign will not get lost in a storm, even if the weather is unknown to them\u003c\/em\u003e. It is therefore not a compass, it is a protection.
