The Grímnismál gives it three roots—one toward Ásgard, another toward the frost giants, and the third toward Niflheim. Beneath the latter, Níðhöggr, "he who strikes with hatred," gnaws relentlessly. Its very name tells the story: Yggdrasil means "Ygg's horse," and Ygg is a name for Odin—an allusion to the nine nights he spent hanging from the tree, pierced by his own spear, to tear the secret of the runes from the depths.
