It appeared in the late Middle Ages on crow's beaks (becs de corbin) and war hammers, to counter something the Scandinavians never had to face: plate armor. Against a steel plate, a sharp edge slips; a narrow point, however, concentrates all the impact on one spot and can pierce. The Viking axe, facing chainmail and wooden shields, had no reason to invent this.

To learn more, our anatomy of the Viking sword details how these weapons were forged, and our dossier on warrior equipment puts each piece into its proper context.

In the same department

Viking Wolf-Head Axe: Runic Blade, 50 cm

Engraved Viking Bearded Axe: Gold Bands, 50 cm

Viking Gold and Silver Hatchet: Short Format, 36 cm

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0974/0569/8430/files/hache-de-guerre-a-bec-manche-enveloppe-58cm-ambiance.jpg?v=1787667043
