It became widespread in Europe in the late Middle Ages, when plate armor made edges ineffective: against a steel plate, a blade slides off, whereas a mace transmits the shock through it. Scandinavian excavations from the Viking Age yield spears, axes, swords, and knives — never maces. As for the spiked skull, it comes from no tradition: it is a role-playing game and album cover image, born in the 20th century.

To learn more, our anatomy of the Viking sword details how these weapons were forged, and our dossier on warrior equipment puts each piece into its proper context.

In the same section

Viking Wolf-Head Axe: Runic Blade, 50 cm

Viking War Hammer: Beast Medallion, 50 cm

Gold and Silver Viking Hatchet: Short Format, 36 cm

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0974/0569/8430/files/hache-viking-double-lame-mousse-pu-60cm-cosplay.jpg?v=1785675949
