In 1639 and again in 1734, two Danish farmers unearthed two solid gold 5th-century horns in Gallehus, Southern Jutland, covered in figures and bearing a runic inscription — one of the oldest known sentences in a Germanic language. They joined the royal cabinet in Copenhagen. On the night of May 4, 1802, a goldsmith stole and melted them down to extract the metal. Only drawings made before the theft remain, from which current replicas were recreated. The drinking horn was not a second-rate utensil: it was the object one covered in gold.

📖 To learn more: Viking mugs and tankards: the guide to the Nordic tavern

♦ Complete your Viking collection

Natural Viking Horn: the traditional mug

Traditional Ox Horn Viking Tankard 380 ml

Viking Horn Glass 410 ml in blown glass

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0974/0569/8430/files/mug-viking-corne-buffle-sombre-avec-sac-toile.jpg?v=1786206404
