The round shield was the most important defensive weapon of the Viking warrior. Made of assembled lime or pine planks and covered in leather, it generally measured between 75 and 90 cm in diameter. The umbo, the metal boss in the center, protected the wearer's hand and could serve as an offensive weapon during close combat. Each warrior personalized their shield with distinctive colors and patterns to be recognized on the battlefield.
