A warrior carved from a cylinder
The pendant is a narrow stainless steel cylinder, with the upper part depicting the bust of a bearded, helmeted warrior, and the lower part covered in raised golden interlace patterns. Approximately 4 cm, on a 60 cm braided chain. Find it in our Viking Necklace collection.
The horned helmet: an operatic invention
Let's say it right away, since the pendant features one: Vikings never wore horned helmets. Only one complete Viking Age helmet has been found, at Gjermundbu in Norway in 1943 — an iron cap made of four plates with an eye mask. No horns. The image comes from the costumes created by Carl Emil Doepler for the 1876 premiere of Wagner's Ring, and it has been with us ever since. This pendant belongs to that imagery, not to archaeology — it is a beautiful piece of jewelry, not a reconstruction. Our article on Viking armor details the actual equipment.

The warrior's helmet has horns — is that historical?
No, and we might as well say so plainly. No horned Viking helmet has ever been found. The only known complete helmet, the Gjermundbu helmet from Norway, is an iron cap made of four plates, with no horns. The horned helmet comes from 19th-century opera costumes. Here it is a motif from popular imagery, not a reconstruction.
What do the gold-tone knotwork patterns represent?
Knots with no beginning or end, in the spirit of Scandinavian ornamentation. They run around the entire lower part of the cylinder.
How big is the pendant?
About 4 cm tall, a narrow cylinder that is easy to wear under a shirt.
