Dragon ships, or drakkars (from the Old Norse drekkar), were the Vikings' emblematic vessels. Long and narrow, they could sail the open sea as well as travel up rivers, thanks to their shallow draft. Their carved dragon-shaped prow was meant to scare off evil spirits and impress enemies. These marvels of naval engineering allowed the Vikings to reach North America five centuries before Christopher Columbus.
