A 20 cm longship, three warriors and six shields

The ship fits on a shelf, but the scene is complete. The prow ends in a dragon's head with an open mouth; the stern curls into a tight volute. Between them, three bearded warriors wearing conical helmets stand upright, a round shield on their arm. Three other shields are lined up along the hull.

The molding imitates carved wood: planking ribs, shield boards, strands of hair in the beards. The material does not warp with humidity variations in a heated interior. The rest of the fleet is stored in the Viking boats and longships collection.

What sets this piece apart

  • A scene, not just a boat: the prow warrior has his hand to his forehead, acting as a lookout, while the other two look straight ahead.
  • Six round shields: three carried by the crew, three placed against the hull, each with its central embossed umbo.
  • Two crafted ends: dragon head on one side, volute on the other, both in a very dark brown that contrasts with the ochre of the hull.
  • Hand-painted: the honey shades on the helmets and darker patinas in the crevices vary slightly from one piece to another.
  • Shelf-ready size: 20 cm wide by 0.73 kg. Present enough to occupy a shelf, compact enough not to monopolize it.

Do you prefer to assemble your ship yourself? The 1/50 scale wooden Viking longship model is built piece by piece; this longship comes out of the box ready to display.

Did you know?

In 1880, at Gokstad near Sandefjord in Norway, archaeologist Nicolay Nicolaysen excavated a ship over 23 meters long from a burial mound, built around 890 — and along the hull, the remains of 64 round shields painted alternately yellow and black. To this day, it is the largest set of Viking Age shields found in a single context. Their arrangement tells us something specific: they overlapped to the point of covering the oar holes — a ceremonial shield wall, hung while docked or for a parade, which would have been taken down before using the oars. The row of shields on this model precisely follows this layout. The ship and shields belong to the Oslo collections, awaiting the reopening of the Viking Ship Museum, announced for 2027.
