Frequently Asked Questions about our Viking Boats and Longships
What materials are your longship models made of?
Our drakkar models are crafted from quality wood (pine, birch, or oak depending on the model) with hand-painted or varnished finishes. The metal details (shields, rudder) are made of a durable alloy. Each piece is a carefully finished decorative item.
What are the dimensions of the Viking ship models?
Dimensions vary by model: from 30 cm for compact models ideal for a desk, up to 80 cm for collector's pieces that become the centerpiece of a living room. The exact dimensions are indicated on each product page.
Do the models require assembly?
The majority of our drakkars arrive pre-assembled and ready to display. Some high-end models may require light assembly (sails, mast) — in such cases, clear instructions are provided. No special tools are required.
Are drakkar models a good gift idea?
Yes, our Viking ship models are among our most popular gifts. They appeal to enthusiasts of history, Nordic decor, and model building. Each drakkar is delivered in neat packaging suitable for gifting.
How did the Vikings build their longships?
The Vikings used the clinker technique: overlapping, riveted oak planks, with a one-piece keel carved from a single trunk. This craftsmanship produced ships that were at once lightweight, flexible, and fast, capable of navigating both the open sea and rivers.
Viking Ships & Longships — en savoir plus
This collection gathers our longships in all their forms: wooden models to assemble, ready-to-display scale models, 3D puzzles, building brick sets, and decorative items shaped like ships. The longship is the only Viking object everyone recognizes—but you need to know which one you are buying, because behind the same word, you will find very different projects here.
Scale, length, and assembly level
A 1/50 scale means nothing to those who don't do modeling, and a photo of a model doesn't provide any sense of scale. Here is what our models actually represent, and the work each one requires.
| Model | Length | Assembly |
|---|---|---|
| Wooden model 1/50 | 44 cm | construction kit, several sessions |
| Wooden model 1/72 | 22 cm (× 15 × 19) | kit, more affordable size |
| Wooden 3D puzzle | — | pre-cut pieces, no glue required |
| Building bricks | 456 pieces | construction set assembly |
| Decorative longship | 20 cm (× 8 × 10) | none, ready to display |
| Ship incense holder | 25 cm (× 9 × 6) | none |
How to read a scale. 1/50 means the model is fifty times smaller than the original ship: our 44 cm models represent a longship of about 22 meters, which corresponds to the longships found at Gokstad and Oseberg. The 1/72 scale, being smaller, fits on a bookshelf without taking it over. Conversely, the 20 cm longship has no scale: it is a decorative piece, not a faithful scale model.
Assemble, or display
Wooden models are construction kits, and it is a commitment you should gauge before ordering. A 1/50 wooden model includes dozens of pre-cut pieces, rigging to assemble, and often shields to attach one by one along the hull: expect several evenings of work, patience, and a clear workspace. The result justifies the effort, but this is not a gift for someone who isn't handy.
The 3D puzzle occupies a middle ground: pieces are popped out of a board and assembled without glue or tools, making it the best compromise between the pleasure of building and simplicity. The 456 building bricks, compatible with major brands, are more for those who enjoy this type of play set than for modelers.
The other pieces are simply set in place: the 20 cm decorative longship, the ceramic incense burner where the smoke escapes along the hull, the wood-effect resin incense holder ornament. To understand what these ships really were—their clinker construction, their shallow draft, their ability to navigate rivers—read our article on the construction and navigation of longships.
Wood, and how to care for it
Our models are made of natural wood, sometimes referred to as premium on the most detailed models. Wood reacts to its environment: it dislikes the humidity of a bathroom, direct sunlight that bleaches light decks, and sudden temperature changes that cause the joints to shift. A shelf away from the window is the ideal spot.
For maintenance, a soft brush is enough—dust accumulates in the rigging, and a cloth can snag the cords. Never get an assembled model wet: the wood glues used in this type of kit are not waterproof.
Frequently asked questions
How big is a 1/50 model? 44 cm long, which represents a real ship of about 22 meters. The 1/72 scale measures 22 cm.
Are the models delivered assembled? No, they are construction kits. Only the 20 cm decorative longship and the incense holder items arrive ready to display.
Does the 3D puzzle require glue? No. The pieces are popped out of a pre-cut board and assembled by interlocking them.
How long does it take to assemble a model? Several sessions for a 1/50 kit, depending on your experience. The 3D puzzle and the brick set can be finished in an evening or two.
Can I put a model in a bathroom? No. Humidity causes the wood to swell and the glue joints to fail.
Are the bricks compatible with major brands? Yes, they are standard interlocking bricks.
What are the delivery times and costs? Tracked delivery is free on orders over €49, regardless of the delivery country.
