Two axes on six sides
The face is hexagonal — six sides that catch the light differently than a round shape — and bears two crossed axes engraved in relief, against a blackened background bordered by beads. The shoulders are guilloché patterned. Sizes 7 to 13. Find it in our Viking Ring collection.
Why the axe, and not the sword
The sword was an object of prestige: time-consuming to forge, expensive, and passed down with its own name. The axe, however, was already in every farmhouse — for splitting wood, cutting, and building. Turning one into a weapon only required a longer handle and a better-tempered iron head. This is why it dominates warrior graves, along with its long-bearded variant, the skeggøx. Our article on the Viking axe details the types and their actual usage.
Choosing your size
American sizes: 7 US ≈ 54 FR, 8 ≈ 57, 9 ≈ 59, 10 ≈ 62, 11 ≈ 65, 12 ≈ 67, 13 ≈ 70. To measure, wrap a strip of paper around the base of your finger, mark the overlap, and measure in millimeters: this is your direct French size. As the face is flat, this signet ring slides over the knuckle without difficulty.
The axes that were recovered
Archaeology distinguishes several types, classified by Jan Petersen in 1919 based on more than a thousand Norwegian specimens. The most spectacular is the Dane axe, with a wide flared blade and long handle, which was wielded with two hands — the one shown in the Bayeux Tapestry in the hands of Harold’s housecarls. The most widespread remained the short axe, the farm tool, whose handle was simply lengthened. It is this duality — tool and weapon, daily life and war — that is summarized by the crossed motif of this signet ring.
Specifications
- Material: stainless steel, does not tarnish
- Motif: engraved crossed axes, hexagonal face
- Sizes: 7 to 13 (US)
Why two crossed axes?
Because the axe, not the sword, was the ordinary Viking's weapon: already found on every farm and far cheaper to make. It dominates warrior graves by a wide margin.
Why a hexagonal top?
It's a deliberate design choice: the six facets catch the light differently from a round top and frame the motif in a more graphic way.
Does the ring snag?
No, the engraving is recessed and the edges are softened. It can be worn every day without getting in the way.
