A mane chiseled lock by lock
A lion's head in profile, mouth slightly open, its mane overflowing the circular frame of the medallion. Each lock is worked separately, and the hollows are darkened to accentuate the relief. Stainless steel, approximately 3 cm, on a 60 cm braided chain.
A universal motif, not a Nordic one
It must be said: the lion is not an animal of the North. The great predators of the Scandinavian imagination are the wolf — Fenrir, Geri, and Freki — and the bear, from which the berserker warriors took their name (ber-serkr, "bear-shirt"). The lion, for its part, belongs to European heraldry and Egypt. It is a beautiful piece of jewelry, just not a Viking amulet. If you are looking for the predator of the North, see our article on Fenrir.
The lion, animal of coats of arms
While the lion does not belong to mythological North, it does occupy its heraldry: the lion of Norway, crowned and holding the axe of Saint Olaf, has appeared on the kingdom's coat of arms since the 13th century. Three leopards adorn those of Denmark from around the same period. The lion of the Folkung dynasty reigns over those of Sweden. None of these countries ever sheltered a living lion — which is precisely the point of heraldry: it borrows its beasts from prestige, not local fauna. Wearing a lion, therefore, is to remain within a Scandinavian tradition, just not that of the sagas.
The work on the mane
Each lock is chiseled separately and overflows the circular frame, giving the medallion its relief. Approximately 3 cm in diameter, stainless steel.
Specifications
- Material: stainless steel, does not tarnish
- Pendant: approximately 3 cm in diameter
- Chain: braided link, 60 cm, lobster clasp
Does the lion appear in Norse mythology?
No. The lion is foreign to Scandinavian wildlife and imagination — the great predators of the North are the wolf and the bear. We will not invent Norse roots for it.
Is the mane detailed?
Each lock is chased separately, with blackened recesses that give depth to the relief.
How big is it?
A medallion about 3 cm in diameter, on a 60 cm braided chain.
