A compass-bearing axe
The blade of this stainless steel axe features the Vegvísir at its center, surrounded by Celtic knots and runes engraved into the metal, extending down to the bail. The pendant is approximately 4.5 cm, on a 60 cm braided chain. Find it in our Viking Necklace collection.
What the Vegvísir really is
It is almost always presented as the "Viking compass." This is inaccurate, and we prefer to be upfront about it. The Vegvísir first appears in the Huld, an Icelandic manuscript compiled by Geir Vigfússon in 1860—about eight centuries after the end of the Viking Age. However, the accompanying text is magnificent: he who bears this sign will not lose his way, even in bad weather, even when the path is unknown. An Icelandic symbol from the 19th century, then, whose promise is worth more than the false antiquity often attributed to it. Our article on the Vegvísir covers this history in detail.

For whom
For travelers, both literal and figurative. It pairs well with our braided leather Vegvísir bracelet.
Is the Vegvísir really a Viking symbol?
No, and we would rather say so than sell a legend. The Vegvísir first appears in the Huld, an Icelandic manuscript compiled in 1860 — some eight centuries after the Viking Age. It is an Icelandic symbol, beautiful, but modern.
So why wear it?
Because its meaning is a beautiful one: “the one who will not get lost, even in bad weather, even without knowing the way”. You can love a symbol without inventing an extra thousand years of history for it.
How big is the pendant?
About 4.5 cm tall for the axe, on a 60 cm braided-link chain.
