The foolproof method: take a t-shirt you already own that fits you well. Lay it flat and measure from one armpit seam to the other. Enter this number in the Flat Width column: no calculations required. This way, you are comparing garment to garment, without relying on a theoretical size—and it is precisely these theoretical sizes that vary from one manufacturer to another.
The cut runs small: narrower in the shoulders and shorter in the body than a European cut for the equivalent size. If you are between two sizes, choose the larger one: this is the advice that prevents the most returns.
A note on letters. These sizes follow a specific nomenclature, and sizes beyond XXL are practically never used in standard French ready-to-wear: a 4XL, 5XL, or 6XL do not correspond to any standard French size. Worse yet, the same letter does not mean the same thing from one manufacturer to another: in this category, an "L" can range from 94 to 112 cm in chest circumference depending on the model. Do not trust the letter, trust the centimeters.

The word berserkr likely means "bear shirt"—ber-serkr—referring to a pelt worn in battle; a minority of philologists interpret it as "shirtless," meaning bare-chested. The Haraldskvæði, a 9th-century poem, describes them at the Battle of Hafrsfjord howling and biting their shields.
