The claw and the knot
A bear claw print occupies the center of the ring, surrounded by engraved Celtic interlace that extends onto the shoulders of the band. Intaglio engraving, then blackened, on polished steel. Sizes 7 to 13. Find it in our Viking Ring collection.
The berserker's bear
The word says it all: ber-serkr, "bear-shirt." Snorri Sturluson describes these warriors of Odin who went into battle without chainmail, biting their shields and becoming "as strong as bears or bulls." A thousand explanations have been proposed—hallucinogenic mushrooms, ritual trance, alcohol—and none have been proven. What is certain is that the sagas feared them as much as they admired them. Our article on berserkers summarizes what we truly know.
Choosing your size
American sizes: 7 US ≈ 54 FR, 8 ≈ 57, 9 ≈ 59, 10 ≈ 62, 11 ≈ 65, 12 ≈ 67, 13 ≈ 70. To measure without a reference ring, wrap a strip of paper around the base of your finger and measure the circumference in millimeters: it corresponds directly to the French size.
The bear in the graves
Archaeology confirms what the sagas tell, but in a different way. Bear claws have been found deposited in Scandinavian Iron Age and Viking Age graves—sometimes alone, sometimes with phalanges, a sign that an entire pelt had been placed in the burial and had disappeared through decomposition. The deceased was laid to rest on a bear fur. They have been counted in several hundred graves in Sweden and Norway. What this meant exactly, no one knows; that it mattered, is certain.

What does the bear claw represent?
The bear is the animal of the berserkers — the word ber-serkr literally means “bear shirt.” These warriors were said to fight in a frenzy that made them impervious to blows.
Is the engraving deep?
It's cut in and then blackened, which makes the motif stand out against the polished steel. The surface stays flat, so the ring doesn't snag.
How do I choose my size?
US sizes 7 to 13. A US 9 roughly corresponds to a French 59-60.
