The bell bikers never buy for themselves: it is given to them
A metal guardian bell in an antique silver finish, to hang under the motorcycle, on a keyring or on a bag with its key ring. Four Viking designs: one-eyed Odin under his winged helmet, the hammer Mjölnir, a horned helmet, or a bearded, helmeted Viking skull. About 3 cm in diameter.

What sets this piece apart
- A legend on the road: according to biker tradition, evil road spirits hide in the motorcycle and cause breakdowns and falls; the ringing of a bell hung low traps them.
- It is meant to be given: custom says you do not buy your own bell. Given as a gift, it protects twice, they say: the rider who carries it and the bond with the one who gave it.
- A real weight of metal: the design is cast in relief all around the bell, and the clapper rings clear.
To go with it, see our Viking Thor's Hammer Bottle Opener, which also hangs on a keyring.

Did you know?
No horned Viking helmet has ever been found. The only near-complete helmet of the period, recovered from a grave at Gjermundbu in Norway and dated to the 10th century, is a rounded iron cap with a face guard, with neither horns nor wings. Horns and wings were born in the 19th century, on an opera stage: costume designer Carl Emil Doepler put them on the heroes of Wagner's Ring of the Nibelung at Bayreuth in 1876. Odin, on the other hand, really is one-eyed in the myths: he gave an eye to the giant Mímir to drink from the well of wisdom.
To explore further, our article on Odin tells of that sacrifice, and our article on Viking armour shows the real Gjermundbu helmet.

Where should I hang the bell on a motorcycle?
As low as possible on the frame, at the front or near the engine, where it rings without getting in the way of any control. It can also go on a keyring or a bag.
Why do people say it should be given?
It is biker tradition: a bell received as a gift is said to protect better than one bought for yourself. It is a legend, and a lovely present.
What is it made of?
Zinc alloy, antique silver finish, with a metal key ring.
Did the Vikings wear horned helmets?
No: none has ever been found. Horns and wings come from the costumes of Wagner's opera in 1876. The horned helmet design plays on that image.
How big is it?
About 3 cm in diameter; the Viking skull design, the tallest, is close to 5 cm.
