The weapon of the many
A stainless steel axe with a flared blade and handle featuring raised golden interlace, topped with an eight-spoked sun wheel. The contrast between the blackened steel and the gold plating highlights every detail. Approximately 5 cm high, on a 60 cm braided chain. Find it in our Viking Necklace collection.
Why the axe, not the sword
The sword was a prestige object: time-consuming to forge, expensive, and passed down with a name. The axe, however, was already in every farm—for splitting wood, cutting, and building. Turning one into a weapon only required a longer handle and better-tempered iron. This is why it widely dominates warrior graves, along with its long-bearded variant, the skeggøx. Our article on the Viking axe details the types and their actual usage.

For whom
For those who prefer the tool over the religious symbol. In the same spirit, see our collection of weapons and replicas.
What does the eight-spoked wheel at the top represent?
A sun wheel, a motif found in Scandinavian art as early as the Bronze Age. Beware of common shortcuts: it is neither a rune nor a “magic symbol” attested by a medieval source.
Was the axe the ordinary Viking's weapon?
Yes. Far more than the sword, which was expensive and reserved for the elite, the axe was the weapon of the many — an everyday tool turned into a weapon of war, including the long-bearded variant, the skeggøx.
Does the gold tone fade over time?
It is a PVD plating, far more durable than classic gilding. Just avoid abrasive products and repeated rubbing on the gold-tone areas.
