This pendant doesn't just show the treetop: dense foliage occupies the top, but the roots unfurl in sculpted scrolls across the entire bottom half. The tree that holds the nine worlds
The Grímnismál gives it three roots: one plunges toward Ásgard, near the well of Urðr where the Norns reside; the second toward the frost giants, at the well of Mímir; the third toward Niflheim, where Níðhöggr gnaws at the wood. Why are the roots so prominent?
Because in the texts they matter as much as the branches. The Grímnismál gives Yggdrasil three roots: one toward Ásgard, another toward the frost giants, and the third toward Niflheim, where the dragon Níðhöggr gnaws at it relentlessly.
What does the name Yggdrasil mean?
Literally “Ygg's horse.” Ygg is a name of Odin, and “his horse” refers to the gallows — an allusion to the nine nights he spent hanging from the tree, pierced by his spear, to wrest the secret of the runes.
