The tree caught in the serpent's circle
In the center, a tree with symmetrical branches and roots; all around it, a coiled serpent biting its own tail, closing the medallion. Stainless steel, approximately 3 cm in diameter, on a 60 cm braided chain. Find it in our Viking Necklace collection.
Yggdrasil and the one who gnaws it
The ash tree Yggdrasil holds the nine worlds. The Grímnismál gives it three roots—one toward Ásgard, another toward the frost giants, and the third toward Niflheim. Beneath the latter, Níðhöggr, "he who strikes with hatred," gnaws relentlessly. Its very name tells the story: Yggdrasil means "Ygg's horse," and Ygg is a name for Odin—an allusion to the nine nights he spent hanging from the tree, pierced by his own spear, to tear the secret of the runes from the depths. Our guide to Viking symbols explores these tales.

What does the serpent surrounding the tree represent?
A serpent biting its own tail, enclosing the world tree in an endless circle. In the texts, it's Níðhöggr who gnaws at the roots of Yggdrasil from Niflheim — the pendant offers a condensed take on it.
What is Yggdrasil?
The ash tree that holds up the nine worlds. The Grímnismál describes its three roots, and the Völuspá names it in its very first stanzas. Its name literally means “Ygg's horse” — Ygg being a name of Odin, referring to the nine nights he spent hanging from its branches.
How big is it?
A medallion about 3 cm in diameter, on a 60 cm braided chain.
