Dagaz, the day — the exact moment when night turns
Two triangles joined at the tips, like a lying hourglass, engraved on a beard and hair bead made of bronze-patinated alloy. Dagaz names the day — and its design says exactly what it means: the point where two halves meet and reverse.

What sets this beard bead apart
- The rune of transition: neither night nor full day, but the instant that separates them.
- Its symmetrical design makes it one of the most recognizable, and one of the few that reads the same in both directions.
- A sleeve, not a clasp: the bead slides onto the lock of hair before braiding. It is the thickness of the braid that secures it, so there is nothing that can break.
- Hole diameter of approx. 6 mm: the only criterion that really matters. It should be slightly narrower than the finished braid, and slightly wider than the loose lock of hair.

Did you know?
In a land where the winter sun barely rises, day is not a given: it is an event. The Anglo-Saxon rune poem calls the day "the Lord's sending, dear to men," and modern Icelandic has kept dagur, almost unchanged since Old Norse. The rune of the day, in the North, is not a calendar platitude — it is an eagerly awaited return.
To learn more, our Viking hairstyle guide details cuts, braids, and beards with historical sources, and our Futhark alphabet guide covers each sign one by one.

What does the Dagaz rune mean?
Dagaz means day, and more precisely the shift from night to day. Its shape, like an hourglass lying on its side, represents that turning point.
Was this rune used in the Viking Age?
Not in this form. Dagaz belongs to the Elder Futhark, in use before the Viking Age; the Vikings' Younger Futhark has only sixteen signs.
What braid thickness does this bead fit?
The hole is about 6 mm, which fits a medium beard braid or a thin braid of hair.
Can I wear several beads on the same braid?
Yes, and they actually hold better together: two or three spaced-out beads lock each other in place on the braid.
