The troll cross is often presented as an ancestral Scandinavian amulet, but no ancient examples have been found. The design was popularized in the late 1990s by a Swedish silversmith, who claimed to have been inspired by a family heirloom. The belief it draws upon is real: in the Swedish countryside, iron was thought to repel trolls and spirits.
