A compass on a square face
The Vegvísir occupies the entire square face of the signet ring, its eight branches engraved in intaglio against a blackened background. The shoulders are adorned with a radiating pattern. Available in polished steel or gold plating, at the same price. Sizes 7 to 13. Find it in our Viking Ring collection.
What the Vegvísir really is
It is almost always presented as "the Viking compass." This is not accurate, and we prefer to be upfront about it. The Vegvísir first appeared in the Huld, an Icelandic manuscript compiled by Geir Vigfússon in 1860—about eight centuries after the end of the Viking Age. The text accompanying it, however, is magnificent: he who wears this sign will not lose his way, even in bad weather, even without knowing the path. An Icelandic symbol from the 19th century, then, whose promise is worth more than the false antiquity often attributed to it. Our article on the Vegvísir covers this history in more detail.

Is the Vegvísir a true Viking symbol?
No, and we'd rather say so than sell a legend. It first appears in the Huld, an Icelandic manuscript compiled in 1860 — about eight centuries after the Viking Age. It's an Icelandic symbol, a beautiful one, but modern.
So why wear it?
Because its promise is a beautiful one: whoever wears this sign will not get lost, even in bad weather, even without knowing the way. You can love a symbol without inventing a thousand extra years for it.
Does the gold-tone version cost more?
No, both finishes are the same price. The gold tone is a PVD plating on the same steel.
