Engraved, Not Embossed
This gold-toned Viking barrette is a solid, elongated oval plate with tapered ends, bordered by a beaded cord. The interlace patterns are engraved into the surface rather than embossed: the finish is matte and non-reflective, contrasting with the braided barrettes in our collection. Features a clip closure and a very flat profile. Find it in our collection of Viking barrettes and hair jewelry.
For the same gold finish with an embossed pattern, see the gold braided barrette.
What Sets This Barrette Apart
Engraved or embossed: two opposite treatments of the same metal, resulting in two very different looks.
- Engraved design: the only one in our range with this style. The pattern is defined by shadow, not shine.
- Very flat profile: it fits under a hat or hood without creating a bump.
- Full beaded border: the cord encircles the entire piece, framing the silhouette.
- Clip closure: no minimum hair length required.
For a flat profile in silver, see the silver braided barrette.

Did You Know?
Engraving and embossing require different tools and varying amounts of time. Scandinavian goldsmiths primarily used the lost-wax casting method, which creates relief in a single step, reserving chisel engraving for touch-ups and unique pieces. This is why mass-produced items—such as oval brooches—are almost always embossed, whereas engraved pieces are rarer and often indicate custom-made work.

Brooch or hair barrette: which one to choose?
| Type | Where it is worn | What you need to know |
|---|---|---|
| Garment brooch (fibula) | On a cloak, a shawl, a coat or a jacket lapel. | These are the largest pieces in the range. Six close with a straight pin and a clasp; two are penannular: an open ring locked by the tension of the fabric, with no spring to wear out. |
| Barrette with a hair stick | In a bun, a braid or a half-up ponytail. | Two pieces: the plate sits on the hair, the stick goes through the lock and holds everything in place. You need enough hair for the stick to go through: with hair shorter than shoulder length, the hold becomes uncertain. |
| Light barrette or clip this product | On medium-length hair, including fine hair. | The filigree models have a small chain that holds the stick; the flat barrettes close with a clip and need no minimum length. These are the most discreet pieces and the easiest to put in. |
| Medallion barrette | Flat on a half-up ponytail or a low bun. | A solid disc that sits on the gathered lock instead of going through it. It is the shape that needs the least hair length, and the only one that shows a scene rather than an ornament. |
How to wear it
There is no size to choose, but you need enough hair. These pieces hold by the lock they go through: with hair shorter than shoulder length, the hold becomes uncertain.
How to put in a stick barrette, in three steps: gather your hair into a bun or a half-up ponytail, place the plate over it, then slide the stick into the left slot, through the lock, and out through the right slot. The lock caught between the two holds everything, not a spring.
The sticks on their own (moon, leaves, sword) go straight into a twisted bun, without a plate. The fuller the bun, the better they hold.
Clip barrettes need no minimum length: they are the only ones suited to short or fine hair.
If it slips: add a discreet hair tie under the plate to give the stick something to go through. The four filigree models also have a small chain that holds the stick, so it does not fall if it comes out.
Care: dry cloth. Avoid water, hairspray and styling sprays, which dull the finish and build up in the hollows of the metal.
How does it differ from the braided barrette?
In how the metal is worked: here the plate is solid and the design is engraved into it, whereas the braid is raised. The look is more matte and less sparkly.
What exactly is its shape?
An elongated oval with tapered points, edged with a beaded border all the way around.
How does it fasten?
With a clip on the back, like the two other flat barrettes in the section.
Is it thick?
No, it is a thin plate. It sits flat and does not add bulk under a beanie or a hood.
