The Classic Men's Earring
These polished stainless steel skull earrings reduce the motif to its essentials: a compact skull, hollowed eye sockets, and defined teeth. The shiny surface reflects light, making the piece visible despite its small size. Find this product in our Viking earrings collection.
For the horned variant, which is more striking, see our horned skull studs.
What Distinguishes This Pair
Choosing polished over blackened steel is not a minor detail: it changes how the piece is perceived.
- Mirror-polished steel: reflections define the contours, where a blackened finish would highlight the depths.
- Complete modeling: brow ridges, cheekbones, and jaw are sculpted, not just suggested by a cutout.
- Compact size: the stud remains flush against the lobe and can be worn day and night without a second thought.
- Coherence: matches perfectly with a chain, watch, or ring in polished steel.

Did you know?
It is often claimed that Vikings drank from the skulls of their enemies. This is false, and the source of the error is precisely identified: in 1636, Danish scholar Ole Worm translated an Old Norse expression, ór bjúgviðum hausa, which means "from the curved branches of the skulls" — in other words, from horns, since they grow on the head. His Latin translation suggested that they drank from the skulls themselves, and the mistranslation spread throughout Europe. The skull therefore remains a style motif, not a Nordic banquet object.

Polished or blackened: which should I choose?
Polished reflects light and stands out despite the small size; it goes with a chain or a watch in shiny steel. Blackened deepens the relief and suits heavily engraved designs better.
Did the Vikings drink from skulls?
No. The idea comes from a mistranslation by the Danish scholar Ole Worm in 1636: the Norse expression referred to drinking horns, not skulls. The motif is decorative, not historical.
Can I wear just one?
Yes. Wearing a single stud asymmetrically is very common among men, and the skull is one of the motifs best suited to it.
Does polished steel scratch easily?
No. 316L stainless steel is hard and stands up well to everyday micro-scratches. Store it flat, away from rubbing against other jewelry, to keep its shine.
