A Beetle Seen from Above, Ridged Wing Cases
These scarab stud earrings show the insect flat, as if pinned in an entomologist's box: wing cases ridged lengthwise, a well-defined thorax, and two horns raised toward the front. The treatment is naturalistic, with no stylization. Find this product in our Viking earrings collection.
For another arthropod rendered in full relief, our solid steel spider studs play in the same register.
What Sets This Pair Apart
A successful insect comes down to texture: without ridges, a beetle is just an oval.
- Ridged wing cases: the veins are carved lengthwise, which catches the light and gives the insect's back its relief.
- Raised horns: they rise out of the plane of the stud and identify the species at a glance.
- Push-back clasp: a single post under the thorax keeps the stud lying flat.
- Stainless steel: the grooves between the ridges don't blacken.
To stay with invertebrates but add stones, see our stone-set spider studs.

Did You Know?
The scarab is the quintessential Egyptian protective amulet, associated with Khepri, the reborn sun. Nothing Norse about it — yet objects from that far away really did reach Scandinavia. The most astonishing case is Helgö, an island in Lake Mälaren in Sweden, where excavations turned up, side by side, three unrelated pieces: a small bronze Buddha statuette cast in northern India around the 6th century, a Coptic bronze ladle from Egypt, and an Irish crozier mount. Three continents in a single Swedish find. The trade routes of the North reached much farther than we imagine, and an Egyptian motif on a Scandinavian ear would have shocked no one.

Is the scarab a Viking motif?
No, it is Egyptian: it is the amulet of Khepri, the reborn sun. We say so frankly. That said, Norse trade routes reached Egypt and India, as the Helgö finds in Sweden show.
How big is the insect?
About one centimeter long. That is enough for the grooves on the wing cases to stand out, while remaining a classic stud size.
Do the horns catch?
No. They are short and rounded at the tip. The risk is the same as with any stud in relief, which is to say low.
Is this style more on the masculine side?
It works for both. The naturalistic rendering and the absence of a stone give it a fairly neutral character, closer to a natural history specimen than to ornate jewelry.
