An Eye At The Center Of A Sunburst
These sun-eye stud earrings combine two ancient motifs: an almond-shaped eye set with a small white zircon as a pupil, surrounded by a crown of tapered rays of uneven lengths. The result evokes as much a sun as a gaze, and that is precisely the sought-after ambiguity. Find this product in our Viking earring collection.
For another motif radiating from a center, see our rosette studs.
What Sets This Pair Apart
A crown of rays must remain irregular so as not to resemble a gear.
- Uneven length rays: the alternation breaks the mechanical symmetry and gives the motif its solar aspect.
- Set pupil: the white zircon in the center catches the light and focuses the gaze exactly where it needs to be.
- Push-back clasp: stem centered behind the eye, the stud stays flat against the ear.
- Stainless steel: the fine rays maintain their sharpness without tarnishing.
For a protective motif in a different vein, our Vegvísir hoops play on the same intention.

Did you know?
The most beautiful Scandinavian sun has nothing to do with Vikings: it is three thousand four hundred years old. The Trundholm sun chariot, discovered in 1902 in a peat bog in Zealand, Denmark, dates from the Bronze Age, around 1400 BCE. It is a bronze disk mounted on wheels, pulled by a horse, and the object hides an admirable subtlety: only one of its sides is gold-plated. The most widely accepted interpretation is that the golden side is the sun of the day, pulled from east to west, and the bare bronze side is the sun of the night, brought back in the opposite direction underground. Two thousand years before the Viking Age, people already knew how to represent the sun's path — and ask themselves what becomes of it once it sets.

Is it an eye or a sun?
Both at once, and that's deliberate: the central almond reads as an eye, the crown of rays as a sun. The motif plays on this ambiguity, which is common in protective emblems.
Is this motif Viking?
Not in this form. The sun disk, however, is a very old Scandinavian motif: the Trundholm sun chariot, in Denmark, depicts it as early as 1400 BC, two millennia before the Viking Age.
Are the rays pointed?
No. They look tapered, but their tips are softened. The stud sits flat against the earlobe and doesn't catch in your hair.
How big is the motif?
About one centimeter in diameter, rays included. It's a visible stud, though the central detail can only be made out at close range.
