The Vegvísir on a Blackened Steel Hoop
These Viking Vegvísir hoop earrings feature the eight-armed symbol engraved into a round medallion, framed by runes, on a fully blackened hinged ring. The darkening fills the recesses of the engraving, making each branch of the motif stand out. Find this product in our Viking earrings collection.
The same hoop in bright steel features the triquetra: our runic triquetra hoops.
What Distinguishes This Pair
The Vegvísir is a fine motif: without contrast, its eight branches would blur together.
- Blackened finish: the black settles into the grooves and leaves the edges bright — this is what makes the symbol legible.
- Front-facing medallion: the motif remains facing the observer regardless of the ring's movement.
- Hinged closure: a simple click is all it takes, with no pusher or pin to align.
- Stainless steel: the darkening is achieved on the metal itself, so it will not flake off.
For the Vegvísir associated with Thor's hammer, our Mjölnir Vegvísir dangles combine both symbols.

Did you know?
Let’s be clear from the start: the Vegvísir is not a Viking symbol. It appears for the first time in the Huld, a collection of Icelandic magical signs hand-compiled in 1860 by Geir Vigfússon, now kept at the National Library of Iceland. The manuscript accompanies the drawing with a brief note: whoever wears it will not lose their way in a storm, even if they do not know the route. Eight centuries separate this notebook from the Viking Age. Its global spread is even more recent — it owes much to Björk, who had the motif tattooed on her arm in 1982, long before tattoo studios made it a classic. A beautiful symbol can be recent without ceasing to be beautiful: we prefer to tell you the truth.

Does the Vegvísir really date from the Viking Age?
No. Its earliest known appearance is in the Icelandic Huld manuscript, compiled in 1860 by Geir Vigfússon. Eight centuries separate that notebook from the Vikings. It's a late Icelandic symbol, not an Old Norse one.
What does the original text say about it?
The manuscript says that whoever carries it will not lose their way in storms, even without knowing the route. The name itself means “the one who shows the way.”
Will the blackening wear off?
No. It's produced on the metal itself, not applied as a surface coating. Friction points can slowly lighten, which deepens the contrast with the engraved grooves even further.
What is the diameter of the hoop?
About one and a half centimeters. It's a compact size that sits close to the earlobe, without swinging.
