The Jaw That Bites the Ring
These dragon head hoop earrings in blackened steel close the beast's jaws onto the other end of the ring. The dark finish settles into every scale, highlighting the sculpting. Find this product in our viking earrings collection.

What Sets This Pair Apart
The design utilizes the circular shape instead of just sitting on it.
- Joined jaw and tail: the ring becomes a creature biting its own tail — a motif found throughout Scandinavian ornamentation.
- Individual scales: each one is recessed, giving the blackened finish areas to catch.
- Blackened steel: it deepens the details where polished steel would flatten them under reflections.
- Closed ring: no moving parts, nothing that will open on its own.

Did you know?
The dragon heads on longships were removable — and for a specific reason. The Icelandic law code known as the Grágás mandated the removal of the figurehead upon approaching the coast, so as not to frighten the landvættir, the guardian spirits of the land. A ship arriving in peace would therefore display a bare prow; the carved head was only reattached when setting out on an expedition. The dragon head was not merely decorative: it signaled intent.

Why a blackened finish rather than a polished one?
On a deeply engraved motif, the black settles into the grooves and brings out the design. Polished steel throws off reflections that flatten the relief and make the scales hard to read.
Were the dragon heads on longships fixed in place?
No, they were removable. Icelandic law required them to be taken down when approaching the coast so as not to frighten the guardian spirits of the land, the landvaettir.
How big is the hoop?
It's a medium-diameter hoop that stays close to the earlobe. The dragon's jaws take up the lower part, visible mainly in profile.
Does the finish stand up to the shower?
Yes, stainless steel doesn't rust. However, avoid pool water and abrasive cleaners, which dull the blackening.
