When Form Tells the Story of the Motif
These stainless steel Jörmungandr serpent hoop earrings wrap the snake around the ring until it meets itself. The form and the subject say the same thing—it is rare, and that is what makes this piece just right. Find this product in our Viking earrings collection.

What Sets This Pair Apart
A closed ring is not a manufacturing constraint here; it is the subject itself.
- Joined head and tail: they meet at the opening, the hoop becomes the Nordic Ouroboros.
- Scales along the entire length: the texture runs from the snout to the tip of the tail.
- Visible from the front and in profile: unlike a stud, the hoop follows the movement of the head.
- Major symbol: Jörmungandr is one of Loki's three children, alongside Fenrir and Hel.

Did you know?
Jörmungandr, the Midgard Serpent, was cast into the ocean by Odin and grew until it encircled the world and bit its own tail. Snorri's Edda recounts the most amusing episode of the myth: in disguise, Thor visits the giant Útgarða-Loki, who challenges him to lift his cat. Thor manages to lift only one paw off the ground. The giant later confesses to him that the cat was Jörmungandr himself, and that lifting just one of his paws had terrified those present. The two will meet again at Ragnarök: Thor will kill the serpent, then take nine steps before succumbing to its venom.

Who is Jörmungandr?
The Midgard Serpent, one of Loki's three children, along with Fenrir and Hel. Thrown into the ocean by Odin, he grew until he encircled the whole world and bit his own tail.
Why a hoop rather than a drop earring?
Because the shape tells the story of the motif: a serpent biting its own tail calls for a closed ring. It is one of the rare pieces of jewelry where the shape is not arbitrary.
What is his connection to Thor?
They are sworn enemies. The Edda tells how Thor lifted one paw of a cat that was in reality Jörmungandr. They will kill each other at Ragnarök.
Is the diameter large?
It is a medium-sized hoop that stays close to the earlobe. The serpent takes up its entire circumference, which makes it easy to read in profile.
