Two Intertwining Snakes
These intertwining snake hoop earrings in stainless steel feature two bodies crossing on the ring, with heads facing each other at the opening. The knot is the true focus of the piece—and it is a deeply Nordic motif, unlike many others in this category. Find this product in our Viking earrings collection.
For a unique snake that wraps around the hoop, see our Jörmungandr hoop earrings.
What Distinguishes This Pair
Interlacing is the decorative grammar of the North—provided it is executed with relief.
- Voluminous intersection: the bodies actually pass over one another, creating a shadow rather than just a simple drawing.
- Engraved scales: the texture runs the entire length of both snakes.
- Facing heads: they meet at the hoop's opening, closing the composition.
- Vivid movement: the relief catches the light from multiple angles as you turn your head.

Did you know?
Scandinavian art from the Viking Age almost never depicts an animal at rest: it stretches, folds, and knots it until the body becomes a continuous line. Archaeologists have classified these grammars into successive styles, named after their discovery sites—Borre, Jelling, Mammen, Ringerike, and Urnes. The latter, named after an 11th-century Norwegian stave church, pushes the principle to the extreme: thread-like beasts entwine so tightly that it is impossible to distinguish where one begins and the other ends. Two knotted snakes are therefore perfectly in keeping with the Nordic vocabulary.

Is knotwork a real Viking motif?
Yes, it's actually the central decorative language of Scandinavian art. The Borre, Jelling, Mammen, Ringerike and Urnes styles are all variations on this principle of knotted animal bodies.
How is this different from the Jörmungandr hoops?
Here two serpents cross and knot together on the ring. On the Jörmungandr model, a single serpent goes all the way around and meets its own tail: the shape tells the story of the world being encircled.
Is the relief pronounced?
The bodies actually pass over one another, which creates a cast shadow. That's what sets sculpted knotwork apart from a motif simply engraved flat.
Is it a unisex model?
Yes. The moderate diameter and the animal motif make it wearable by anyone, as a pair or on its own.
