A Knot Without Beginning or End
These Nordic knot earrings in stainless steel suspend a diamond-shaped interlace, braided with no visible beginning, from a small hoop. The motif is openwork: light passes through the strands, making the piece feel airy. Find this product in our Viking earrings collection.
For the interlace design in ring form, see our intertwined serpent hoops.
What Sets This Pair Apart
It is the most versatile model in the department, and that is no coincidence.
- Abstract motif: Neither animal nor weapon, it can be worn in any situation without clashing with an outfit.
- Openwork braiding: The spaces between the strands visually lighten the piece and let it breathe.
- Raised strands: The intersections actually pass over one another, which creates shadows.
- The perfect gift: The most universally appealing choice in the department when you don't know the recipient's precise tastes.

Did you know?
We often readily attribute specific meanings to the Nordic knot — eternity, family ties, protection. To be honest: no source from the Viking Age states this. The texts never comment on the meaning of the interlaces. What archaeology does show, however, is remarkable technical mastery: on the Urnes stone as well as on the Mammen fibulae, a single strand crosses itself dozens of times without ever contradicting itself. The meaning we give it today is modern; the virtuosity, however, is truly from the era.

What does the Norse knot mean?
Honestly, no Viking Age source gives it an explicit meaning. The meanings you read everywhere — eternity, family ties — are modern interpretations. What does date from the period is the technical virtuosity.
Is it a good gift?
Yes. It is the most universally liked model in our range. With no animal or weapon, the abstract design appeals widely and goes with any other Norse piece.
Is the openwork design fragile?
No, stainless steel is hard and the strands are thick enough. The gaps are a design choice, not a thinning of the material.
Can it be worn at work?
Yes. Along with our twisted hoops, it is the most understated model in our range, and the abstract design carries no particular connotation.
