An Arm Rather Than The Whole Beast
These Kraken tentacle hoop earrings in stainless steel feature a single arm, spiraled beneath the hoop, with suckers clearly defined down to the tip. The design choice is effective: at this scale, a complete octopus becomes illegible, whereas a coiled curve remains instantly recognizable. Find this product in our Viking earring collection.
For the version that shows the entire animal in a smaller format, see our octopus small blackened steel hoops.
What Sets This Pair Apart
Reducing a motif to its most recognizable line is a design choice—and it pays off.
- Tapered spiral: the arm narrows steadily toward the tip, which gives the piece movement.
- Raised suckers: aligned under the tentacle, they create a texture visible up close.
- Instant recognition: even from a distance, the coiled curve is understood at a glance.
- Closed hoop: no hook, nothing dangling or likely to open on its own.

Did you know?
Scandinavians of the Viking Age didn't need a giant octopus to fear the sea. The Konungs skuggsjá, a Norwegian treatise written around 1250 for the education of a prince, lists the dangers of the crossing to Iceland and Greenland: floating ice, aggressive whales, and an immense being called hafgufa that sailors sometimes mistook for an island. The kraken as we depict it today—a cephalopod gripping a ship—did not become fixed in imagery until the 18th century.

How are these different from your small octopus hoops?
Here the motif is reduced to a single tentacle coiled in a spiral, on a hoop with a larger diameter. The small hoops show the whole animal in a compact size with a blackened finish.
Does the tentacle stick out from the hoop?
It wraps under the hoop and follows its curve. Nothing hangs loose, so nothing gets pulled when you get dressed.
Did the Vikings know about the kraken?
They feared a huge sea creature called the hafgufa, described around 1250 in the Norwegian King's Mirror. But the kraken in the form of a giant octopus does not appear until the 18th century.
Is it suitable for everyday wear?
Yes. The closed hoop and the absence of moving parts make it a sturdy model, and the stainless steel makes it unaffected by sweat and showers.
