The Octopus Stripped Down to the Essentials
These octopus hoop earrings in blackened steel wrap compact tentacles around a small-diameter ring. The piece stays tight against the lobe: it is the most discreet hoop in our selection, and one where the detail is a reward in itself. Find this product in our viking earrings collection.
For the version that shows a single spiraled arm, see our Kraken tentacle hoops.
What Distinguishes This Pair
At this size, everything depends on the finesse of the modeling.
- Defined suction cups: they are individually hollowed out under the arms, not just suggested by a general texture.
- Folded arms: the tentacles curve back on themselves and follow the curve of the ring.
- Blackened finish: the black settles into the crevices and brings out the design that polished steel would flatten.
- Small diameter: wearable every day, including under a helmet or beanie.

Did you know?
The kraken does not belong to the myths of the Viking Age, contrary to what is often read. The Scandinavian sea monster appears in late Norwegian sources—the Konungs skuggsjá, or "King's Mirror," written around 1250, describes a gigantic hafgufa—and it was Bishop Erik Pontoppidan who, in his 1752 Natural History of Norway, gave it its giant cephalopod form. Seven centuries pass between the end of the Viking Age and this description.

Is the kraken a Viking monster?
No. The first detailed description dates from 1752, written by the Norwegian bishop Erik Pontoppidan — seven centuries after the end of the Viking Age. It's a sea motif, not a Norse symbol.
Are these hoops very noticeable?
No, it's the most discreet size in this section. The small diameter keeps the piece snug against the earlobe; the detail of the suckers reveals itself up close.
Does the blackened finish last over time?
Yes, with normal use. It's chlorinated products and abrasive cleaners that dull it, not daily wear or sweat.
Can I wear them under a helmet?
That's exactly the advantage of the small diameter: nothing sticks out or gets caught. It's the model in this section best suited to wearing under a helmet or a beanie.
