Did you know?
The North did not manufacture its chains this way. Where we weld links one by one, Scandinavian goldsmiths braided silver wire: a technique known as wire knitting, where a single strand is looped onto itself and then pulled through a drawplate to tighten. The graves of Birka and the Norwegian Hoen hoard have yielded superb examples, as supple as fabric. The result resembles a chain, but no soldering was ever involved.
