No leather bracer has ever come out of a Viking grave, and this one owns it

A pair of bracers in stiff faux leather, studded with rivets all the way round. Three ring straps cross the top of the forearm, and side lacing through eyelets fits them to the arm. They cover 22 cm of forearm, in brown or black.

What sets this piece apart

  • They hold their shape: stiff enough to keep their curve around the arm, supple enough to wear all day.
  • The lacing sets the size: it tightens or loosens to fit the arm, from a slim wrist to a thick forearm.
  • They change an outfit: over plain tunic or shirt sleeves, they are enough to turn a villager's costume into a warrior's.

Did you know?

No leather bracer is known from Viking archaeology. Warrior graves at Birka in Sweden or Gjermundbu in Norway have yielded swords, axes, shield bosses, and at Gjermundbu a helmet and remains of a mail shirt, but nothing that protects the forearm. What turns up on arms are silver rings: a generous chieftain was a "ring-breaker", handing out to his followers bracelets cut from his hoard. The strapped leather bracer was born on film sets and LARP fields, and that is where it makes its mark.
