The Vikings had no pockets: everything was worn on the belt

A medieval purse that slides onto your belt by its strap: a gathered suede-effect fabric body, a decorated round faux leather flap, and a bronze-finish metal button that closes it with a cord loop. Five patterns to choose from: Vegvísir, Tree of Life, dragon, Celtic knot or square Celtic knot.

Find this piece in our capes and hoods section.

What sets this piece apart

  • The flap carries the design: a faux leather disc about ten centimetres across, light pattern on a dark brown ground, edged with topstitching. It is what people see from a distance, and it is what sets the five models apart.
  • A button with its own symbol: the same on all five models, an eight-armed Ægishjálmur (Helm of Awe) around a triskelion, in bronze-finish metal.
  • It is genuinely useful: coins, keys, a lighter or dice fit inside; the gathered pouch holds its contents, and the flap closes with a cord loop passed over the button.

Did you know?

Viking Age clothing had no pockets: knives, combs, fire steels and money hung from the belt or sat in a pouch. And that money was weighed more than it was counted: foreign coins and cut-up jewellery went onto small folding scales. The Spillings hoard, unearthed on Gotland in 1999, gives a sense of scale: 67 kg of silver, including 14,295 coins, the vast majority of them Arab dirhams. One detail of the flap, however, is not period: the Vegvísir comes from a 19th-century Icelandic manuscript, the Huld, long after the Vikings.

To explore further, our guide to Viking symbols tells the story of the Vegvísir and the Ægishjálmur, and our calendar of Viking fairs and festivals tells you where to wear it.
