Neither cape nor hood: a square of fabric, and everything you can do with it
A large cotton and linen square in stone grey, with an intentionally wrinkled weave, edged with long knotted fringe on all four sides. It wraps around the head and shoulders, drapes over a single shoulder, or can simply be worn as a scarf. No stitching, no fasteners: the drape creates the shape.

What sets this piece apart
- The most versatile piece in the collection: nothing is sewn, so nothing dictates a silhouette. Ranger, traveler, pilgrim — it is not tied to any specific era.
- Cotton and linen, no synthetics: the fabric breathes and is designed to wrinkle. It is this wrinkled texture that gives it a worn look rather than a brand-new one.
- Fits in a bag: unlike a long cape, it folds down to nothing and can be pulled out whenever the photo calls for it.

Did you know?
Wrapping your head and shoulders in the same fabric is a timeless gesture, but in the Christian North, it was not optional: married women had their heads covered, as urban excavations have confirmed. The Viking levels of Coppergate, in York, and those in Dublin have yielded caps and headbands made of silk — silk that came from Byzantium, worn by urban women in wattle-and-daub houses. It is not the specific shape of this stole that is documented, but the act itself, and the fact that people were willing to pay for it.
To learn more, a Scandinavian cloak was not buttoned: it was fastened with a brooch. Our Viking fibulae and brooches are exactly the pieces that held these garments in place.

Is it a cape?
No, and we'd rather say so: it's a large square of fringed fabric, with no seams or fastening. You wrap it around yourself; you don't put it on like a garment.
What material is it made of?
Cotton and linen, with a crinkled weave. The crinkle is intentional: it gives a worn-in look rather than a brand-new one.
Does it come in several sizes?
No, it's one size. Since nothing is fitted, the same piece suits everyone — it's the way you drape it that changes.
Is it an attested Viking shape?
The shape, no. The habit, yes: covering the head was the norm, and excavations in York and Dublin have turned up silk caps.
