No plant yields green — it took two
A long hooded cloak in a deep forest green, closed at the neck and falling to the floor. A beige and red woven trim runs the entire length of both edges of the opening. The hood is roomy and lined, deep enough to cover the face.

What sets this piece apart
- The most readable green outdoors: against a backdrop of wood or stone, this shade stands out where black gets lost and bright colors clash.
- The trim does all the work: an intricate band running the entire height on both sides — the only element of this cloak that has a true archaeological ancestor.
- Deep, lined hood: it stays up without slipping and leaves the face in shadow.

Did you know?
Here is a fact that always surprises: no plant in Northern Europe yields a green color directly. Neither leaves, nor stems, nor mosses — chlorophyll does not set on wool. To obtain green, two successive baths were required: first woad, which gives blue, then weld or birch leaves, which give yellow. Two dyes, two vats, twice the work. This is why green was never a poor person's color in the Scandinavian world: every green garment represented a double visit to the dye house, and was priced accordingly.
To learn more, a Scandinavian coat did not use buttons: it was fastened with brooches. Our Viking fibulae and brooches are the exact pieces that held these garments in place.

Is this cape made of wool?
No, it is thick polyester with a wool-like feel. It drapes and weighs like wool, but it dries quickly and does not felt.
Did the Vikings have green?
Yes, but it was expensive. No plant gives green directly: the cloth had to be dyed blue with woad, then yellow on top. Two dye baths, two costs.
Is this a historically accurate Viking cut?
No. The Scandinavian cloak was a rectangle pinned at the right shoulder, with no attached hood. The closed hooded cape is a late medieval silhouette.
Which size should I choose?
Sizes range from S to 4XL. If you are torn between two, take the larger one: a cape is worn loose.
