The color that required weeks of patience
A long hooded cape in a deep violet, fastened at the neck and reaching the floor. A beige and red woven trim runs along the entire height of both edges of the opening. The hood is loose and lined, deep enough to cover the face.

What makes this piece stand out
- The rarest shade in the collection: violet is almost never seen on a costume cape, which is exactly what makes it stand out in a group photo.
- The trim does all the work: an intricate band running the full height on both sides — the only element of this cape with a true archaeological ancestor.
- Deep, lined hood: it stays up without sliding and leaves the face in shadow.

Did you know?
Mediterranean purple, derived from the murex snail, was out of reach for the North — it took thousands of shells to dye a single garment. Scandinavians and Islanders therefore obtained their violet differently: through lichens. Orchil, known as korkir in Iceland, was scraped from rocks and then macerated in fermented urine for several weeks before yielding a deep violet. The process remained in use in Scotland and Iceland until the 19th century. Violet was therefore not expensive in terms of raw materials: it was expensive in time, a form of luxury that our modern economies have forgotten.
To learn more, a Scandinavian cloak did not button up: it was fastened with a brooch. Our Viking fibulae and brooches are exactly the pieces that held such garments in place.

Is this cape made of wool?
No, it's thick polyester with a brushed, wool-like feel. It drapes and weighs like wool, but it dries quickly and doesn't felt.
Is purple a credible Norse color?
Yes, but a rare one. In the North it was obtained from lichens steeped for several weeks, not from Mediterranean murex. It was a color of patience more than of wealth.
Is this a historically accurate Viking shape?
No. The Scandinavian cloak was a rectangle pinned at the right shoulder, with no built-in hood. The closed, hooded cape is a late medieval silhouette.
Which size should I choose?
Sizes range from S to 4XL. If you're between two, take the larger one: a cape is meant to be worn loose.
