Woad blue, the color of Birka's rich graves
A long hooded cape in a deep steel blue, fastened at the neck and falling to the floor. A beige and red woven trim runs the full height of both edges of the opening. The hood is ample and lined, deep enough to cover the face.

What sets this piece apart
- The best-attested color of the North: if a single shade in this section deserves to be called Scandinavian, it is this one. Blue dominates the dyed wools found at Birka.
- The trim does all the work: a decorative band running the full height, on both sides — the only element of this cape that has a true archaeological ancestor.
- Deep, lined hood: it stays up without slipping and leaves the face in shadow.

Did you know?
Woad (Isatis tinctoria) is the queen of dyes in the North. Yet its leaves contain no visible blue: they have to be fermented, compacted, then steeped in an alkaline vat kept lukewarm for days, until the bath turns yellow-green. The cloth comes out yellow, and only turns blue as it dries in the air, before your eyes, within a few minutes. This transformation was enough to give dyeing a reputation for magic throughout medieval Europe. In the rich graves of Birka, blue is the dominant color of the dyed wools: it was not the rarest color, it was the most coveted.
To go further: a Scandinavian cloak was not buttoned, it was pinned. Our Viking brooches are exactly the pieces that held these garments in place.

Is this cape made of wool?
No, it's thick polyester with a wool-like feel. It drapes and weighs like wool, but it dries quickly and doesn't felt.
Is blue historically plausible?
It's the best-attested color in the Scandinavian world. Woad produced a colorfast blue, and it dominates the dyed wools in the wealthy graves at Birka.
Is this a historically accurate Viking design?
No. The Scandinavian cloak was a rectangle pinned at the right shoulder, with no built-in hood. The closed, hooded cape is a late medieval silhouette.
Which size should I choose?
Sizes range from S to 4XL. If you're torn between two, take the larger one: a cape is meant to be worn loose.
