Madder red, the color the North knew how to make
A long hooded cape in a deep burgundy, closed at the neck and falling to the floor. A beige and red woven trim runs the full length of both edges of the opening. The hood is loose and lined, deep enough to cover the face.

What distinguishes this piece
- The trim does all the work: an ornate band along the entire height, on both sides. It is the only element of this cape that has a true archaeological ancestor — the tablet-woven bands from Birka.
- A heavy drape: the fabric is dense enough to fall in clean folds instead of floating. This is what separates a cape from a sheet in photos.
- Deep, lined hood: it stays up without sliding and leaves the face in shadow. This is the desired effect, and not every hood achieves it.

Did you know?
Burgundy is the only warm color the North produced without difficulty. It comes from madder (Rubia tinctorum), whose root was ground: a solid, wash-resistant red found on dyed wools in Birka as well as in the Coppergate excavations in York. Contrary to what one might imagine, red was therefore not a luxury color in the Scandinavian world — it was the accessible color par excellence, second only to woad blue in frequency. What was expensive was not the dye: it was the trim sewn on top.
To go further, a Scandinavian cloak was not buttoned: it was fastened. Our Viking fibulae and brooches are exactly the pieces that held these garments in place.

Is this cape made of wool?
No, it is thick polyester with a wool-like feel. It drapes and weighs like wool, but it dries quickly and does not felt.
Is this a historically accurate Viking shape?
No. The Scandinavian cloak was a rectangle pinned at the right shoulder, with no built-in hood. The closed, hooded cape is a late medieval silhouette, popularized by the movies.
Does the hood stay up?
Yes. It is roomy and lined, deep enough to stay in place and keep your face in shadow.
Which size should I choose?
Sizes range from S to 4XL and mainly affect shoulder width and length. If you are between two sizes, take the larger one: a cape is meant to be worn loose.
