Black destroyed itself — that is why so little of it remains
A long hooded cloak in black, fastened at the neck and floor-length. A beige and red woven trim runs the full height of both edges of the opening, the only contrast on the piece. The hood is ample and lined, deep enough to cover the face.

What makes this piece special
- Black highlights the trim: on other colors, the band interacts with the fabric; here, it is the only thing one sees.
- The most versatile: this is the one that can be worn beyond costume — evening wear, stage, photography — without reading as a disguise.
- Deep, lined hood: it stays up without sliding and leaves the face entirely in shadow.

Did you know?
Black was the most difficult color to obtain before the chemical age, and the most destructive. It was obtained through a reaction between iron — bog iron, rusty nails — and tannin from oak galls or alder bark. The result was deep, but the reaction never stopped: it continued to eat away at the fiber for decades. This is the reason why ancient black textiles have almost all disappeared — they destroyed themselves. Most garments that sources call "black" were in reality very dark browns or blues so dark they were indistinguishable.
To go further, a Scandinavian cloak was not buttoned: it was fastened. Our Viking fibulae and brooches are exactly the pieces that held these garments in place.

Is this cape made of wool?
No, it is made of thick polyester with a wool-like feel. It drapes and weighs like wool, but it dries quickly and does not felt.
Did the Vikings wear black?
Rarely a true black. It was obtained through an iron-tannin reaction that ate away at the fiber over time. So-called black garments were most often very dark browns or blues.
Is this shape true to Viking times?
No. The Scandinavian cloak was a rectangle pinned at the right shoulder, with no built-in hood. The closed hooded cape is a late medieval silhouette.
Which size should I choose?
Sizes range from S to 4XL. If you are torn between two, take the larger one: a cape is meant to be worn loose.
