Loose at the top, tight at the calf: the silhouette Ibn Rustah described
Cotton and linen trousers, roomy at the waist and thighs, drawn in at the lower leg by eyelet lacing on each calf. The waist is elasticated with a drawstring: no button, no zip, just a cord to adjust. Four colours to choose from, brown, black, olive green or off-white, from M to 3XL.

What sets this piece apart
- The lacing does the job of leg wraps: pulled tight, it holds the lower leg close and lets the trousers billow above; loosened, the leg falls straight. One piece, two silhouettes.
- A forgiving waist: the elastic and drawstring cover a wide range of waist sizes, from 68 to 110 cm for M and from 88 to 126 cm for 3XL.
- A fabric that breathes: the cotton and linen blend stays light under a tunic and a cloak, through a whole day at a medieval fair.

Measured flat, to within 1 to 3 cm. Between two sizes, take the larger one: the drawstring takes in the waist, but nothing makes the leg longer.
Did you know?
The Vikings did wear trousers, in several cuts. The most complete pair to survive is older than them: the Thorsberg trousers, in wool, recovered from a bog in Schleswig and dated to the 4th century, with their feet woven in one piece. In the early 10th century, the Persian geographer Ibn Rustah described the Rus, Scandinavians settled along the rivers of the East, in trousers so wide that each pair took, he wrote, a hundred cubits of cloth, gathered and tied below the knee. Those trousers were wool, sometimes linen: cotton did not grow in the North.
To explore further, our article on Viking daily life covers the rest of the wardrobe, and our calendar of Viking fairs and festivals tells you where to wear them.

Which size should I choose?
Check the length first: from 98 cm in M to 106 cm in 3XL. The waist adjusts with the elastic and the drawstring. Between two sizes, take the larger one.
Is it pure linen?
No: it is a medium-weight blend of cotton and linen. It is softer than pure linen and creases less.
Can I wear it without tightening the lacing?
Yes. Loosened, the leg falls straight; pulled tight, it hugs the calf and makes the trousers billow above.
Did the Vikings wear trousers?
Yes, in several cuts: narrow, wide, or baggy and tied below the knee, as Ibn Rustah described among the Rus in the 10th century. They were wool or linen; cotton was not grown in Scandinavia.
Is it warm enough for outdoors?
It is medium-weight: ideal from spring to autumn. In cold weather, add fur leg wraps over the lacing.
